Radu Stanca
Radu Stanca(March 5, 1920 – December 26, 1962) was aRomanianpoet, playwright, theatre director, theatre critic and theoretician.
Biography
[edit]Born inSebeș,he spent his early years inCluj,where he attended theGheorghe Barițiu High School.He then studied philosophy at theUniversity of Cluj,completing his studies in 1942 inSibiu(after part of the university moved there whenNorthern Transylvaniawas ceded toHungaryas a result of theSecond Vienna Award).[1]Stanca was member of theSibiu Literary Circle,a movement of young poets and essayists who tried, between 1946–1948, to rejuvenate the main literary style and aesthetical thinking. In 1947 he received theLovinescuaward for histragicomedyDona Juana.[2]He died in Cluj, at age 42.
One of the leading Romanian theatres is theRadu Stanca National Theatrein Sibiu.[3]Streets inAlba Iulia,Cluj-Napoca, and Sibiu bear his name.
