Randolph Stanley HewtonRCAMC(June 12, 1888 – March 17, 1960) was a Canadian artist,[1]known for his figurative work[2]and as a colorist.[3]

He was born inMaple Grove, Quebec,and studied withWilliam Brymnerat the Art Association ofMontreal,going on to study at theAcadémie JulianinPariswhere in 1912 he metA. Y. Jackson.[1]He served overseas duringWorld War I,taking part in the Somme offensive, and was awarded theMilitary Crossin 1918. After the war, he worked for Miller Brothers, paper box manufacturers, and became company president in 1921. He left the company to concentrate on painting but had returned to the position of company president by 1926. Hewton also married Isobel Monk (née Robertson) around this time. In 1933, he moved away from Montreal when Miller Brothers moved toGlen Miller, Ontario.[4]

Hewton was invited to show with theGroup of Sevenin 1920[5]and he helped found theBeaver Hall Group,a group of Canadian visual artists based in Montreal, that same year.[6]He went on painting trips with Jackson, andAlbert Robinson.He was the director and senior painting instructor at theArt Association of MontrealSchool of Art in the early 1920s.[7]He also was a founding member of theCanadian Group of Paintersand was elected to theRoyal Canadian Academy of Artsin 1934.[1]

Hewton died inBelleville, Ontario,at the age of 71.[1]

His works are held in the collections of theNational Gallery of Canada,theMusée national des beaux-arts du Québecand theArt Gallery of Ontario.[4]
