Richard Austin Quest(born 9 March 1962) is a British journalist and non-practisingbarristerworking as a news anchor forCNN International.He is also an editor-at-large ofCNN Business.
He anchorsQuest Means Business,the five-times-weekly business programme and fronts the CNN showsBusiness Traveller,[1]The ExpressandQuest's World of Wonder.
Early life and education[edit]
Quest is a native ofLiverpoolin Lancashire (nowMerseyside), England, having been born and partly brought up there. He isJewish.[2]
He was educated at thestate comprehensiveRoundhay SchoolinLeeds,followed byAiredale and Wharfedale Collegeand theUniversity of Leeds,where he earned aBachelor of Lawsin 1983, and was called to theBar.[1]He spent the 1983–1984 academic year in the United States atVanderbilt UniversityinNashville, Tennessee,where he was the news director ofWRVU.
Career[edit]
Quest became a trainee journalist at theBBCin 1985, joining its financial section in 1987, and moving to New York City in 1989 to become the BBC's North American business correspondent.
Quest later worked for the BBC from the United States as part of its then-fledglingBBC News 24channel. He was the business correspondent reporting on, and discussing the worldstock marketin a regular segment entitledWorld Business Reportusually aired between 2:00 am and 3:00 am (GMT), a programme that he presented alongsidePaddy O'Connell.He was also an occasional presenter on the BBC's early-morningBusiness Breakfastprogramme.
Quest joined CNN in 2001, initially as co-presenter of newly-launched programmesBizNewsandBusiness Central.[3]Since this time Quest has covered a variety of different events for CNN, among others an analysis of the US elections asAmerican Questand the start of the circulation ofEurobanknotes and coins on 1 January 2002 and the last official commercial flight ofConcorde.He has also headed up CNN's coverage of several events involving theBritish Royal Family.
In 2006, Quest turned down an opportunity to joinAl Jazeera Englishnews channel, the English language version ofal-Jazeera,"on the grounds that being gay and Jewish might not be suitable".[4]
On 9 April 2015, Quest was announced as the host of theABCgame show500 Questions.He was replaced byDan Harrisfor the show's second season.
On 8 June 2015, Quest appeared as a contestant onThe CNN Quiz Show: The Seventies Editionspecial produced by Eimear Crombie, along with his partnerBrooke Baldwinplaying forStandUp for Kids.
Quest is also an Aviation Correspondent for CNN,[5]and extensively covered the story ofMalaysia Airlines Flight 370,which disappeared on 8 March 2014.[6]Quest later wrote the book,The Vanishing of Flight MH370: The True Story of the Hunt for the Missing Malaysian Plane,published byPenguin Random Houseon 8 March 2016.[6]
Personal life[edit]
In 2008, Quest was arrested in New York City'sCentral Park"with some drugs in his pocket, a rope around his neck that was tied to his genitals, and a sex toy in his boot."[7]Quest admitted being in possession ofcrystal methamphetamine,acontrolled substance.[8]
On 26 June 2014, Quest described his past experience as a closeted gay man on his CNN television programmeQuest Means Business.[9]
