Ronald Earle Glass(July 10, 1945 – November 25, 2016) was an American actor. He was known for his roles as literaryDet. Ron Harrisin the televisionsitcomBarney Miller(1975–1982), and as the spiritual shepherd,Shepherd Book,in thescience fictionseriesFirefly(2002) and its sequel filmSerenity(2005).
Early life
[edit]Glass was born inEvansville, Indiana,the son of Lethia and Crump Glass.[1]
After graduating fromSt. Francis Seminaryin 1964, Glass attended theUniversity of Evansville,where he received aBachelor of Arts,double majoring indramaandliterature.Years later, the university awarded him its Medal of Honor. Glass said in 2007 he knew while he was in college that he wanted to act. With a teacher's encouragement, he performed in a play and went on to an acting career.[citation needed]

Glass made hisstagedebut at theGuthrie TheaterinMinneapolis, Minnesota,before moving toHollywood.His earliest TV appearances include episodes ofSanford and Sonin 1972, an episode ofHawaii Five-Oin 1973, an episode ofMaudein 1973, an episode ofAll in the Familyin 1973, an episode ofThe Bob Newhart Show,and episodes ofGood Timesin 1974. In 1975, he landed the role of Det.Ron HarrisinBarney Miller,which ran until 1982.
The following season, Glass co-starred withDemond Wilsonon television in a remake ofThe Odd Couple,calledThe New Odd Couple.On December 13, 1985, he played a soul-collecting devil oppositeSherman Hemsley's mathematics professor in an episode of the revivedTwilight Zoneseries. In 1992, he co-starred in thesitcomRhythm and Blues,a kind of "blackWKRP",playing "the fifthTop"oppositeRoger Kabler.
In 1996, Glass was cast as uptight history teacher Roland Felcher in NBC sitcomMr. Rhodesopposite comedianTom Rhodes.In 1999, he appeared in two episodes ofNBCsitcomFriendsas Ross Geller's divorce lawyer, Russell.[2][better source needed]
After that, Glass appeared in dozens of television series, including sitcoms such asFamily Mattersand the seriesTeen Angel,where he played God's cousin Rod. He had a guest appearance in theStar Trek: Voyagerepisode "Nightingale".He was a series regular in thescience fictionseriesFirefly(2002) and the sequel filmSerenity(2005), in which he playedDerrial Book,a Christian[3]"Shepherd" with a mysterious past. Glass provided the voice ofRandy Carmichaelfor the Nickelodeon seriesAll Grown Up!andRugrats,and the character Garth in the video gameFable II.In 2008 he appeared in the filmLakeview TerracealongsideSamuel L. Jacksonand starred in the 2010 version ofDeath at a Funeralas Duncan.[citation needed]
Personal life and death
[edit]Glass never married, and though raisedCatholicbecame a devoutBuddhist,and a member ofSoka Gakkai International.[4][5]He died ofrespiratory failureon November 25, 2016, at the age of 71.[6][7]He is interred at the Rose Hills Memorial Park inWhittier, California.
