Rudolf Bibl

Rudolf Bibl(4 May 1929[1]– 27 January 2017) was an Austrian conductor and pianist.

Life

Born in Vienna, parallel to attending aGymnasium,Bibl studied piano, clarinet, composition at theWiener Musikakademieand attended the conducting class ofHans Swarowsky.From 1948, he wasrépétiteurat theGraz Opera.From 1960, he worked at the ViennaRaimundtheaterand theTheater an der Wien.From 1969 to 1973, he wasmusic directorinTrier,from where he gave guest performances in France and Luxembourg.

From 1973, he was conductor at theVolksoper Wien,where he conducted over 2,200 performances, includingDer Vogelhändler,Die lustige Witwe,Die CsárdásfürstinandDie Fledermaus.From 1995 to 2008, he was musical director of theSeefestspiele Mörbisch,for which he put together his own orchestra, theSymphonieorchester Burgenland,consisting of students from theJoseph-Haydn-Conservatory of the Province of Burgenland[de].

Guest performances and concert tours abroad took him to Japan, Italy, Germany and France, for example, to theBerlin State Operaand theOpéra Bastillein Paris.[2][3]At theVienna State Opera,he conductedDie FledermausandDie lustige Witwefrom 1999 to 2003.[4]

Bibl remained closely associated with the Vienna Volksoper until the end. In May 2016, he conducted three performances of Kálmán'sDie Csárdásfürstinas part of a guest performance in Tokyo, his last conducting was a performance ofDie Fledermauson 1 January 2017. According to the house, he conducted 2273 performances at the Vienna Volksoper.[5]

Bibl died at the age of 87, inFrontignan,France.[6]

Bibl was the grandson of thecomposer and organist of the same name(1832–1902) and nephew of the historianViktor Bibl.[1]
