Russell Edward MorrisFRSFRSEFRSCFLSW[1](born 8 June 1967) is a British chemist and Bishop Wardlaw Professor of Chemistry at theUniversity of St Andrewssince 2016.[1][2]He playedfirst-class cricketwhile he was a student at theUniversity of Oxford,[3][4]and also represented the university inassociation footballplaying in Varsity matches at various venues, including Wembley Stadium and Highbury.

Education and early life

[edit]

Russell Edward Morris was born on 8 June 1967 inSt Asaph,Wales, to Merfyn Morris and Ursula Patricia Morris.[5][6]His father Merfyn worked as a plumber inGlan ConwyinNorth Wales.[7]Russell was educated atYsgol Dyffryn ConwyinLlanrwstand went toOriel College, Oxford, where he was awarded aBachelor of Artsdegree inchemistryin 1989, followed by aDoctor of Philosophydegree in 1992[5]for research investigating the synthesis and characterization of metalphosphitesandselenites, supervised byAnthony Cheetham.[8][9]

Research and scientific career

[edit]

Morris's research interests lie in the synthesis, characterisation and application of porous and layered materials includingzeolites[10]andmetal-organic frameworks (MOFs).[11]He developed ionothermal synthesis – the use ofionic liquidsas reactive media for the preparation of solids – a method that has had impact across a wide range of chemistry.[12]His recent work on developing the assembly–disassembly–organisation–reassembly (ADOR) approach[13][14]to the preparation of zeolites offers routes to exciting materials that would not be possible using standard techniques.

Morris is recognized as a pioneer in the use ofporous materialsfor the storage and delivery of biologically active gases for medical applications.[15][16]

Awards and honours

[edit]

Morris was elected aFellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2016.[15]His applications and commercially focused work with MOFgen Ltd.[17]andSasolTechnology UK have been recognised by theBrian MercerAward for Innovation from theRoyal Society. He was elected aFellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh(FRSE) in 2008,[18]aFellowof theLearned Society of Wales(FLSW) in 2012, and aFellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.[when?]In 2019, he was awarded the Tilden Prize by theRoyal Society of Chemistry.[19]

Cricket

[edit]

Morris was a right-handedbatsmanand bowled right-armmedium pace. While studying at theUniversity of Oxford,he made hisfirst-classdebut forOxford University Cricket Clubin 1987 againstHampshire. He made 33 further first-class appearances for the university, the last of which came againstCambridge Universityin the 1991University MatchatLord's.[20]In his 34 first-class appearances for Oxford University, he scored 981 runs at anaverageof 21.32, with a high score of 96.[21]This score, which was one of eightfiftieshe made for the university, came againstSurreyat theUniversity Parksin 1990.[22]The same year, he also appeared once for a combinedOxford and Cambridge Universities sideagainst the touringNew Zealanders.[20]He batted with success in this match:captainingthe side, he scored 75 in the team's first innings before being dismissed byJohn Bracewell, while in the team's second innings, he scored 53 before being dismissed by the same bowler.[23]

While studying at Oxford, Morris was also a part of theCombined Universitiesteam in the 1991Benson and Hedges Cup.[citation needed]He made fourList Aappearances during the competition, againstGloucestershire,Derbyshire,WorcestershireandNorthamptonshire.[24]In these four matches, he scored 44 runs at an average of 11.00, with a high score of 19.[25]

Morris also played forWales Minor Countiesin theMinor Counties Championship, making two appearances in 1990 againstDorsetandWiltshireand one appearance in 1991 against Dorset.[26]

Personal life

[edit]

Morris married Silke Frauke Karen Wewetzer in 2002. They have a son and a daughter.[5]
