Education and career
[edit]Anderson received aBachelor of Sciencedegree from theUniversity of Tennesseein 1976 and aJuris Doctorfrom theUniversity of Memphis School of Lawin 1980. He was then in private practice in Tennessee until 1983, and again from 1987 to 2003, serving in the interim as an assistant commissioner of theTennessee Department of Transportationfrom 1983 to 1985, and as a claims commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Treasury from 1985 to 1987.[1]
Federal judicial service
[edit]In 2003, Anderson became aUnited States magistrate judgefor the Western District of Tennessee. On September 6, 2007, he was nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bushto a seat on theUnited States District Court for the Western District of Tennesseevacated byJames Dale Todd.[1]On April 10, 2008, Anderson was confirmed by theUnited States Senate[2]byvoice vote.[3]and received his commission on May 21, 2008.[1]He became Chief Judge on March 18, 2017[4]and served until January 20, 2023.[1]
In May 2024,NPRrevealed that Anderson had received free travel in December 2021 to the Breakers Colloquium, a privately funded legal seminar hosted atThe Breakersresort inPalm Beach,Florida, but had failed to disclose this on his annual financial disclosure form for that year, in violation of federal ethics law.[5]In response, a public affairs officer for theAdministrative Office of the U.S. Courtstold NPR that this omission was "due to an inadvertent oversight."[5]
