SMS Rail Lines(reporting markSLRS) is ashortline railroadbased at Pureland Industrial Park inBridgeport, New Jersey.The company handles all freight car delivery to businesses located within the industrial park. It also operates lines inMorrisville, Pennsylvania,andGuilderland, New York.Guilderland-based operations operate asSMS Rail Lines of New York, LLC(reporting markSNY). SMS maintains many locomotives built by theBaldwin Locomotive Works.SMS provides chemical off-loading equipment andtransloadfacilities to enable businesses to receive rail freight traffic. The company also operates theWoodstown Central Railroad,atourist railroadbased out ofWoodstown, New Jersey.

In theDelaware Valley,SMS Rail Lines operates both industrial park switching operations[1]and a county controlled rail line.[2]

InGuilderland, New York,SMS Rail Lines of New York, LLC serves the Northeastern Industrial Park, interchanging withCSX Transportationat Guilderland Center, NY andNorfolk Southernat Delanson, NY.[4]

History

SMS Rail Lines began operating in thePhiladelphiaarea in June 1994.[5]In November 2006, the railroad began operations in Albany, New York.[6]The company plans to begin passenger excursions out ofPilesgrove Township, New Jerseyby the end of 2022.[7]Passenger excursions along the Salem Branch are operated as the Woodstown Central Railroad out of a passenger station in South Woodstown.[8]

Motive power

SMS runs a variety of locomotives, most being built by the Baldwin Locomotive works. SMS also owns units built by GM's Electro-Motive Diesel and GE Transportation.[9]
