Sae Islandis the northernmost island[1]within theWestern Islandsof theBismarck Archipelago,Papua New Guinea.It is located just north-west of theKaniet Islands,[1]under which it is often subsumed, although the two are distinct.[1]Another name for the Kaniet(-Sae) Islands is "Anchorite Islands".[1]
The first sighting by Europeans of Sae Island was by the Spanish navigatorIñigo Órtiz de Reteson 21 August 1545 when on board of thecarrackSan Juantried to return fromTidoretoNew Spain.[2][3]
