Inmedicine,salpingo-oophorectomyis the removal of anovaryand itsfallopian tube.[1][2]This procedure is most frequently associated with prophylactic surgery in response to the discovery of aBRCA mutation,particularly those of the normallytumor suppressingBRCA1gene (or, with a statistically lower negative impact, those of the tumour suppressingBRCA2gene), which can increase the risk of a woman developingovarian cancerto as high as 65% (as high as 25% for a mutatedBRCA2gene).[3]
