Santiago Creel Miranda(Spanish pronunciation:[sanˈtjaɣokɾilmiˈɾanda];born on 11 December 1954) is a Mexican lawyer and politician, and a member of theNational Action Party (PAN).Since 1 September 2021, he has been a federal deputy and the current President of theCongress of the Unionand of the Board of Directors of theChamber of Deputies.He served asSecretary of the Interiorduring the presidency ofVicente Fox Quesada,from 2000 to 2005. In 2006, he was elected Senator to theCongress of the Unionand served as President of theSenate of the Republicfrom 2007 to 2008. In 2016 he served asConstituent Deputy of Mexico City.

Creel's campaign information describes him as a lawyer, father, and husband, as well as a Party loyalist.[2] Born to anAmericanfather ofMexican,English,IrishandSpanishdescent, and aFrenchmother ofGerman,German Jewish(as Creel'smatrilineal lineage is Jewish,he should beconsidered to be a JewbyJewish law), Spanish andMexicanancestry, he is a descendant of theCreel-Terrazas familyvia his father René Creel (1921–2009) who was one of the founders of theNational Action Party.[3]Creel has a long history with the PAN. In 2008, he admitted that he is the father of actressEdith González's daughter, Constanza.

Education

Creel received a bachelor's degree in law from theNational Autonomous University of Mexico(UNAM) and subsequently completed graduate studies atGeorgetown Universityand earned a master's degree at theUniversity of Michigan.[4]

Political career

His career highlights include running forHead of Government of the Federal Districtin 2000 (a race he narrowly lost toAndrés Manuel López Obrador). He was later appointed to the cabinet byPresidentVicente Foxto serve asSecretary of the Interior,a position he held from December 2000 to June 2005.

On 1 June 2005, Creel presented Fox with his resignation in order to seek his party's candidacy for the2006 presidential election.Creel's main contender for the PAN's candidacy wasFelipe Calderónwho won the primary elections and went on to become President of Mexico.

In 2006, Creel received aproportional representationseat in theSenateto serve during the60thand61stLegislatures (2006–2012) and led the PAN Senate delegation until June 2008.

2012 PAN presidential primary

Santiago Creel decided to run for the PAN's Presidential Nomination for the 2012 election and initially led polls ahead of the other candidates on the basis of his high profile, but subsequently lost the nomination toJosefina Vazquez Mota.

Constituent Assembly of Mexico City

Creel was one of seven PAN representatives elected by the voters of Mexico City to sit on theConstituent Assembly of Mexico City,which convened on 15 September 2016.[5]
