Sarwar Ahmed(Bengali:সরয়ার আহমেদ;born 9 July 1971) is a British publisher, founder ofEastern Eye,and publisher ofAsianaandAsiana Wedding.

Background

Ahmed was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire and his family moved to London when he was six months old. He was brought up inEast London.His father was aBengalijournalist.[1]

Career

In 1989,[2]at the age of 18,[1]Ahmed foundedEastern Eye[3]and was the managing director of Smart Asian Media Limited. He was formerly publisher of Ethnic Media Group (EMG), a subsidiary of Southnews plc.[1]

Ahmed became editor-in-chief of four newspapers, having bought theAsian Times,The Caribbean TimesandNew Nation,then sold up to launchSmart Asian Media,publishers ofAsian Womanmagazine,Asian BrideandAsian Xpressnewspaper.[4]He later soldSmart Asian Mediaand launchedAsianamagazine.[1][5]

In 2002, Ahmed was appointed to The Newspapers Panel of the Competition Commission.[4]He is currently publisher ofAsianaandAsiana Wedding.[6]

Awards

In January 2013, Ahmed was awarded the Services to Media award at theBritish Muslim Awards.[7][8]
