  • Black, Sirius– Harry's godfather.Animagus.He was falsely accused of murdering twelve Muggles and betraying Lily and James Potter to Voldemort. Sirius escapes from the wizard prisonAzkabanand joins the revived Order of the Phoenix. He is later killed by his cousinBellatrix Lestrange.

  • Carrow, Alecto– Death Eater and sister of Amycus Carrow. Professor of Muggle Studies and Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts underSeverus Snape.
  • Carrow, Amycus– Death Eater and brother of Alecto Carrow. Professor ofDefence Against the Dark Artsand Deputy Headmaster of Hogwarts under Severus Snape.
  • Cattermole, Reginald– Employee of the Magical Maintenance Department at the Ministry of Magic. Impersonated byRon WeasleyusingPolyjuice Potion.
  • Chang, Cho– Ravenclaw Quidditch Seeker and member of Dumbledore's Army. One year above Harry, and his first love interest. Cho is one of the first students to believe Harry's declaration of Voldemort's return. In the film adaptation ofOrder of the Phoenix,Cho exposes Dumbledore's Army toDolores Umbridgewhile under the influence of a truth potion, whereas in the novel it is her friend Marietta Edgecombe who willfully betrays the group. In Harry's fifth year, Cho kisses him and goes on a date with him, but Harry eventually ends their relationship. Cho is portrayed byKatie Leungin theHarry Potterfilms.[15]

  • Crabbe, Vincent– Slytherin student in Harry's year and the son of a Death Eater. Beater for the Slytherin Quidditch team and member of Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad. Killed by his own Fiendfyre spell. Crabbe is portrayed byJamie Waylettin theHarry Potterfilms.[16][17]
  • Creevey, Colin– Muggle-born Gryffindor student one year below Harry. Older brother of Dennis Creevey and member of Dumbledore's Army. Killed during theBattle of Hogwarts.Colin is portrayed byHugh Mitchellin the film adaptation ofChamber of Secrets.[18]
  • Cresswell, Dirk– Muggle-born head of theGoblin Liaison Office.Killed by Snatchers.

  • Goyle, Gregory– Slytherin student in Harry's year. Beater for the Slytherin Quidditch team and member of the Inquisitorial Squad. Goyle is portrayed byJoshua Herdmanin theHarry Potterfilms.[43]
  • Granger, Hermione– Muggle-born Gryffindor prefect in Harry's year, and one of his closest friends. Co-founder of Dumbledore's Army. Wife of Ron Weasley and mother of Hugo Granger-Weasley and Rose Granger-Weasley.
  • Granger, Mr and Mrs– Hermione Granger's parents. During the Second Wizarding War, Hermione alters their memories to protect them from Voldemort, which causes them to believe they are Wendell and Monica Wilkins. She later restores their memories.[44]
  • Granger-Weasley, Hugo– Son of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and brother of Rose Granger-Weasley. Hugo is portrayed by Ryan Turner in the filmHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2(2011).

  • Grindelwald, Gellert– Dark wizard who was imprisoned after Albus Dumbledore defeated him in the 1940s. In theFantastic Beastsfilm series, Grindelwald and Dumbledore are former lovers who made a blood pact in their youth to never harm each other. However, Grindelwald attempts to indirectly kill Dumbledore.   • Johnson, Angelina– Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and later team captain. She is two years above Harry. She is married toGeorge Weasley.She returns to the school to participate in the Battle of Hogwarts. Angelina is portrayed by Danielle Tabor in the first threeHarry Potterfilms, and byTiana BenjamininGoblet of Fire.[50][51]
  • Jordan, Lee– Gryffindor student two years above Harry. Hogwarts Quidditch commentator and close friend ofFred and George Weasley.InDeathly Hallows,Lee becomes apirate radiobroadcaster on a station calledPotterwatch,which supports the activities of Harry and the Order of the Phoenix.Luke Youngbloodportrays Lee in theHarry Potterfilms and voices him in theOrder of the Phoenixvideo game.

  • Lockhart, GilderoyDefence Against the Dark Artsprofessor and fraudulent celebrity author. Loses his memory after a spell backfires. According to Rowling, Lockhart is the onlyHarry Pottercharacter based on a real-life person. He was inspired by an acquaintance of Rowling who was, in her words, "even more objectionable than his fictional counterpart" and "used to tell whopping great fibs about his past life, all of them designed to demonstrate what a wonderful, brave and brilliant person he was."[53]Lockhart is portrayed byKenneth Branaghin the film adaptation ofChamber of Secrets.[33]

  • Lupin, Teddy– Orphaned son of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks and godson of Harry Potter. He is named after Tonks's father,Ted Tonks.Teddy is ametamorphmaguslike his mother.[54]

  • Macmillan, Ernie– Hufflepuff student in Harry's year. Prefect and member of Dumbledore's Army. InChamber of Secrets,Ernie initially believes that Harry is theHeir of Slytherinand responsible for the attacks on Muggle-born students. Later, he is among the few students who openly support Harry's claims that Voldemort has returned.   • Macnair, Walden– Death Eater and executioner who fails to execute thehippogriffBuckbeak. Injured byHagridduring theBattle of Hogwarts.
  • Malfoy, Draco– Slytherin student in Harry's year. Quidditch Seeker, prefect, member of the Inquisitorial Squad and eventual Death Eater. Portrayed byTom Feltonin theHarry Potterfilms.
  • Malfoy, Lucius– Death Eater. Father of Draco and husband of Narcissa Malfoy. Governor ofHogwartsearly in the series.

  • Pettigrew, Peter– Death Eater and school friend ofSirius Black,Remus Lupinand Harry's fatherJames Potter.Pettigrew betrayed Harry's parents to Voldemort, resulting in their deaths. It is revealed that Ron Weasley's pet rat Scabbers is actually Pettigrew in hisanimagusform. Pettigrew is strangled to death by his own prosthetic hand.

  • Potter, James– Father of Harry and member of the Order of the Phoenix. School friend of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew.Animagusand co-author of theMarauder's Map.Betrayed by Pettigrew and killed by Voldemort.   • Prewett, Fabian and Gideon– Molly Weasley's brothers and members of the original Order of the Phoenix. Killed by Death Eaters.

Q

  • Quirrell, QuirinusDefence Against the Dark Artsprofessor in during Harry's first year. When Harry and Quirrell both try to recover thePhilosopher's Stone,it is revealed that Voldemort has possessed Quirrell's body. Harry holds off Quirrell long enough for Dumbledore to arrive, at which point Voldemort departs Quirrell's body and Quirrell dies. Although Quirrell's first name is never mentioned in the novels, he was given the first name "Quirinus" in theHarry Potter Trading Card Game.Quirrell is portrayed byIan Hartin the film adaptation ofPhilosopher's Stone.[59]

  • Ravenclaw, Rowena– One of the four founders of Hogwarts, and the founder ofRavenclaw House.She was noted for her cleverness and creativity, and prized intelligence in her students. Her wisdom was attributed to herdiadem,which was stolen by her daughter Helena Ravenclaw (who later became the Grey Lady). The diadem later became aHorcrux.
  • Riddle, Delphi – Daughter of Voldemort andBellatrix Lestrangewho tries to bring Voldemort back to life by fulfilling a prophecy. Incarcerated in the wizard prisonAzkaban.
  • Riddle, Tom Marvolo – Slytherin student who became Voldemort.
  • Runcorn, Albert– Ministry of Magic investigator of alleged Muggle-borns. Impersonated by Harry usingPolyjuice Potion.

  • Scamander, Newt– Student expelled from Hogwarts who excels at curing diseases.Magizoologistand author ofFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
  • Scrimgeour, Rufus– Head of theAurorOffice who replacesCornelius FudgeasMinister for Magic.Killed by Death Eaters.
  • Shacklebolt, Kingsley– Auror and member of theOrder of the Phoenix.Bodyguard for the Muggle Prime Minister. Participates in the Battle of Hogwarts, and later replacesPius Thicknesseas Minister for Magic. Portrayed byGeorge Harrisin theHarry Potterfilms.
  • Shunpike, Stan– Conductor of the Knight Bus. Imprisoned inAzkabanon suspicion of being a Death Eater. He is portrayed byLee Inglebyin the filmHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban(2004).
  • Skeeter, Rita– Reporter and tabloid journalist for theDaily Prophetand an unregistered Animagus. There was speculation that the attention given toHarry Potterby the press was the inspiration for Skeeter, but Rowling explained in a 2000 interview that she developed the character before the success of the novels.[60]Skeeter is portrayed byMiranda Richardsonin theHarry Potterfilms.[61]

  • Slytherin, Salazar– One of the four founders of Hogwarts, and the founder ofSlytherin House.He was aParselmouth,an accomplishedLegilimens,and a proponent of pureblood supremacy. According to Albus Dumbledore, Slytherin prized resourcefulness, determination, cunning and ambition in his students.[62]He is described as power-hungry by theSorting Hat.His relics include alocketwhich was later turned into a Horcrux by Voldemort.
  • Smith, Zacharias– Hufflepuff Quidditch Chaser in Harry's year. He joins Dumbledore's Army but is sceptical of Harry's claims. Zacharias is a Quidditch commentator inHalf-Blood Prince.Nick Shirmvoices Zacharias in theOrder of the Phoenixvideo game.
  • Snape, Severus– Hogwarts professor of Potions and laterDefence Against the Dark Arts.Head of Slytherin House. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and a spy for Albus Dumbledore among the Death Eaters. Headmaster of Hogwarts when the Death Eaters take control of the school. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Spinnet, Alicia– Gryffindor student two years above Harry. Quidditch Chaser and member of Dumbledore's Army. She returns to the school for the Battle of Hogwarts. Alicia is portrayed byLeilah SutherlandinPhilosopher's Stoneand byRochelle DouglasinChamber of Secrets.

  • Bogrod – Head goblin atGringotts Wizarding Bank.Put under the Imperius curse when Harry,Ron WeasleyandHermione Grangerbreak into Gringotts.

  • DobbyHouse-elfbelonging to theMalfoy family.InChamber of Secrets,he tries to discourage Harry from returning to Hogwarts. Harry later tricks Lucius Malfoy into setting Dobby free, which earns Harry the elf's undying loyalty. InGoblet of Fire,Dobby works at Hogwarts and helps Harry with the second task of the Triwizard Tournament. When Harry and his friends are captured by Death Eaters inDeathly Hallows,Dobby rescues them. During the escape, he is killed byBellatrix Lestrange.The entertainment websiteIGNdescribed Dobby's death as one of the most emotional moments in the film series.[76]Dobby is voiced byToby Jonesin theHarry Potterfilms.

  • FawkesPhoenixbelonging to Albus Dumbledore. Fawkes saves Harry from theBasiliskinside theChamber of Secrets.InOrder of the Phoenix,Fawkes saves Dumbledore's life by swallowing akilling cursefrom Voldemort. He then bursts into flame and is reborn from the ashes. The wands of both Harry and Voldemort contain a feather from Fawkes's tail.   • FirenzeCentaurwho becomes a professor of Divination inOrder of the Phoenix.The character is based on Steve Eddy, Rowling's former English teacher, who attempted to discourage her from writing fantasy stories.[78][79]Firenze is voiced byRay Fearonin the film adaptation ofPhilosopher's Stone.Firenze has been compared to the centaurChironof Greco-Roman mythology.[80]

  • The Grey Lady– The ghost ofRavenclawHouse. In life, she was Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. After stealing her mother'sdiadem,she was killed by the Bloody Baron. The Grey Lady is portrayed byNina Youngin the film adaptation ofPhilosopher's Stone,and byKelly MacdonaldinDeathly Hallows – Part 2.[81]
  • Griphook– Gringotts goblin who is captured by Snatchers inDeathly Hallows.With the assistance of Harry and Dobby, Griphook and several other prisoners escape fromMalfoy Manor.Griphook then helps Harry break into Gringotts in exchange for theSword of Gryffindor,but he later betrays Harry and his friends. Griphook dies in the film adaptation of the novel. He is portrayed byVerne Troyerin the film adaptation ofPhilosopher's Stoneand byWarwick DavisinDeathly Hallows Part 1andPart 2.[82][33]

  • KreacherHouse-elfwho belongs to Sirius Black, but wishes to serve Bellatrix Lestrange and the Malfoys. Kreacher lures Sirius and Harry into a trap at theDepartment of Mysteries,which results in Sirius's death. Harry then inherits ownership of Kreacher. InDeathly Hallows,Harry and his friends send Kreacher to retrieve alocketwhich is one of Voldemort'sHorcruxes.During the Battle of Hogwarts, Kreacher rallies the Hogwarts house-elves against the Death Eaters. Kreacher is voiced byTimothy Batesonin the film adaptation ofOrder of the Phoenix.The film's producers wanted to cut the character from the film, but Rowling advised them to keep him in.[83]The elf is voiced bySimon McBurneyinDeathly Hallows – Part 1.

  • Muggle Prime Minister – The unnamed sittingPrime Minister of the United Kingdomduring the events of the novels. He is referred to as the Muggle Prime Minister by wizards. He is aware of the wizarding world and is protected by anAuror.

  • Nagini– Voldemort's massive snake that does his bidding. He communicates with her by speakingParseltongue,the language of snakes.[84]She is one of hisHorcruxes.InDeathly Hallows,Nagini devours Charity Burbage, the HogwartsMuggle Studiesprofessor. Nagini is later placed inside the corpse of Bathilda Bagshot, which enables a surprise assault on Harry when he visitsGodric's Hollow.Nagini is slain byNeville Longbottomduring theBattle of Hogwarts.[85]The prequel filmFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwaldreveals that Nagini was once a cursed woman who eventually transformed into a snake. The human Nagini is portrayed byClaudia Kimin the film.[86]
  • Nearly Headless Nick– The ghost of Gryffindor House. He was the victim of a botched beheading, which left his head barely attached to his neck. His full name is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington. He is portrayed byJohn Cleesein the first twoHarry Potterfilms.

  • Peeves– A mischievous Hogwartspoltergeist.Rowling has explained that Peeves is not a ghost, but rather an "indestructible spirit of chaos".[87]Throughout the series, Peeves only listens to a select few individuals:Albus Dumbledore,the Bloody Baron, Nearly Headless Nick andFred and George Weasley.The Hogwarts caretaker, Argus Filch, repeatedly tries to remove him from the castle. However, Rowling stated in an interview that not even Dumbledore would be able to remove Peeves from Hogwarts forever.[88]Peeves was portrayed byRik Mayallin the film adaptation ofPhilosopher's Stone,but his scenes were cut from the finished film.[89]
