Seltz(French pronunciation:[sɛlts];German:Selz) is acommunein theBas-Rhindepartmentof theGrand Estregionin north-easternFrance.[3]It is located on theSauerRiver near its confluence with theRhine,opposite theGermantown ofRastatt.

History

The formerCelticsettlement ofSalisonear a crossing of the Rhine river was mentioned as the RomancastrumSaletioin theNotitia Dignitatumabout 425. Later a part of the Germanstem duchyofSwabia,EmperorOtto Igranted the area to his wifeAdelaide of Burgundyin 968. Saint Adelaide establishedSelz Abbeyin 991 and died here eight years later.

In 1357 EmperorCharles IV of Luxembourgraised Selz to anImperial city,after which the town joined the AlsatianDécapoleleague. It however lost itsimmediatestatus in 1414, when it was mediatised by Elector PalatineLouis III of Wittelsbach.Seltz finally was annexed byFrancein 1680.

Ferry Seltz - Plittersdorf(Germany). The Rhine ferry Seltz - Plittersdorf (in France: Bac Seltz - Plittersdorf or Bac de Seltz) is a yaw cable (reaction) ferry across theRhinesouth ofKarlsruhe.It connects the French municipality of Seltz inAlsaceon the left bank of the Rhine with the German village ofPlittersdorf,a part ofRastatt,on the right bank of the Rhine. The operator is the FrenchEuropean Collectivity of Alsace,the use of the ferry is free.[5]
