Ham Seo-hee(Korean:함서희;[hamsʌhi];born March 8, 1987), anglicised asSeo Hee Ham,is a South Korean professionalmixed martial artistandkickboxer.She is currently signed toONE Championship,where she is ranked #1 in theONE Championship Women's Atomweightrankings.[3]

Ham previously competed in the MMA promotionsDeep,Smackgirl,Jewels,Road FC,UFC,andRizin.She is a formerJewels Atomweight Champion,formerRoad FC Women's Atomweight Champion,and formerRizin Women's Super Atomweight Champion.

Early life

Ham was born on(1987-03-08)March 8, 1987 inGangwon Province,South Korea.[4][5][6]She started training in kickboxing in 2004,[7]when she was in her second year of high school.[4]She was introduced to the Japanese MMA scene by UFC fighterKim Dong-hyun.[4]

With few female fighters to train with in South Korea, Ham regularly trains with male fighters, such as fellow gym memberDong Hyun Kim.[8][9]She is nicknamed "Hamderlei Silva" because of the similarities between her fighting style andWanderlei Silva's style.[10]In Japan, she is occasionally nicknamed "Arale-chan", in reference to her looks outside of the ring bearing resemblance to the characterArale Norimakifrom themangaseriesDr. Slump.[11][12]Currently, Ham uses "Hamzzang" as her official nickname.[1]

Mixed martial arts career

Japan

Ham debuted against Japanese MMA veteran Hisae Watanabe on February 16, 2007(2007-02-16)atDeep 28 Impact,upsetting the favorite Watanabe by winning via unanimous decision.[13][14][15][16]Ham was defeated by Miku Matsumoto viatriangle chokesubmission on May 13, 2007(2007-05-13)atclubDeep Toyama: Barbarian Festival 6.[17][18]

Ham rebounded back from her first loss with a unanimous decision victory over Ayumi Saito on September 6, 2007(2007-09-06)atSmackgirl2007: Queens' Hottest Summer.[19]On December 26, 2007(2007-12-26)atSmackgirl 7th anniversary: Starting Over,Ham challenged Smackgirl Lightweight ChampionYuka Tsujifor her title, losing by unanimous decision in a match that Tsuji completely dominated.[20][21]On February 14, 2008(2008-02-14),Ham participated in theSmackgirl World ReMix Tournament 2008 Opening Round,where she defeatedSaori Ishiokaby unanimous decision.[22][23][24]In the tournament semi-finals on April 25, 2008(2008-04-25),Abe Ani Combat ClubstarMegumi Fujiihanded Ham her third professional defeat by submitting her with anarmbarin theSmackgirl World ReMix Tournament 2008 Second Round.[25][26]

After a year without fights in MMA, Ham made her debut with MMA promotion Jewels and earned another victory on September 13, 2009(2009-09-13)by defeating Misaki Takimoto by unanimous decision atJewels 5th Ring.[27][28][29]Ham next participated atJewels 9th Ringin the first round of the inaugural Jewels Lightweight Queen Tournament, held to crown the first Jewels Lightweight Champion,[30]where she defeatedMai Ichiiby unanimous decision on July 31, 2010(2010-07-31).[31]Ham was slated to compete atJewels 10th Ring,but since she decided to participate in two kickboxing matches with conflicting dates, Jewels released her.[32][33]Jewels later announced that she would still participate in the semi-finals of the Lightweight Queen Tournament atJewels 11th Ring.[34][35][36][37]Ham facedMika Naganoin the semi-finals[36][37][38]and defeated Nagano by split decision. In the tournament final later that night, Ham was defeated byAyaka Hamasakivia unanimous decision.[39][40]Ham had a rematch againstSaori Ishiokaon February 25, 2011(2011-02-25)atDEEP: 52 ImpactinTokyo, Japan.[41]She once again defeated Ishioka by unanimous decision.[42]On March 6, 2011(2011-03-06),Ham faced Anna Saito in a mixed martial arts rules match atGladiator 15: GI 2.Ham defeated Saito by unanimous decision.[43][44][45]Ham facedMei Yamaguchiin aJewels vs. Valkyriematch atJewels 15th Ringon July 9, 2011(2011-07-09).[46][47]She defeated Yamaguchi by unanimous decision.[48][49]Ham challenged Jewels championAyaka Hamasakiin a rematch atJewels 17th Ringon December 17, 2011(2011-12-17).[50]She was defeated by TKO (corner stoppage) after the first round when she could not continue due to injury.[51][52]On April 21, 2013(2013-04-21),Ham faced pro wrestler Ryo Mizunami atGladiator: Dream, Power and Hope.She defeated Mizunami by submission due to an armbar early in the first round.[53]

Ham dropped down in weight to challengeNaho Sugiyamafor the Jewels Atomweight queen title atJewels 24th Ringon May 25, 2013(2013-05-25).[54][55]She defeated Sugiyama by unanimous decision to become the new Jewels Atomweight queen champion.[56][57]Following Jewels' closure, Ham's title was renamed the Deep Jewels Atomweight championship. She defended the title against Sadae Numata atDeep Jewels 2on November 4, 2013(2013-11-04).[58]Ham won the fight by unanimous decision.[59][60]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In early November 2014 Seo Hee Ham signed a four-fight contract withUltimate Fighting Championshipto join UFC's Strawweight division.[61]She made her debut againstJoanne CalderwoodatThe Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned Finaleon December 12, 2014.[62]She lost the fight by unanimous decision.

Ham was expected to faceBec Rawlingson May 10, 2015 atUFC Fight Night 65.[63]However, Ham pulled out of the bout on April 10 and was replaced byLisa Ellis.[64]

After nearly a year away from the company, Ham returned to face Cortney Casey on November 28, 2015 atUFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Masvidal.She won the fight via unanimous decision. The win also earned Ham her firstFight of the Nightbonus award.[65]She lost toDanielle TayloratUFC Fight Night 101on Nov. 26, 2016 via split decision and was subsequently released from the promotion.[66]

Road FC

After briefly considering retirement, Ham signed with Road FC where she became the atomweight champion with a victory overMina Kurobe.On December 23, 2017, she successfully defended her atomweight championship with a first round stoppage overJinh Yu Frey.

Rizin

On June 21, 2019, it was announced Ham would face former DEEP ChampionTomo MaesawaatRizin 17on July 28, 2019.[67]She won the fight by TKO in the first round.[68]

Next, Ham facedMiyuu YamamotoatRizin 19on October 12, 2019.[69]She won the fight via technical knockout in the second round.[70]

With two consecutive victories in Rizin, Ham earned a title shot againstAyaka HamasakiatRizin 20on December 31, 2019. She won the trilogy fight via split decision, becoming the secondRizin Women's Super Atomweight Champion.[71]

Ham vacated her Rizin Atomweight title in October 2020, as she couldn't come to an agreement with Rizin for her next fight.[72]

ONE Championship

After vacating her Rizin Atomweight title, Ham signed withONE Championship,[73]where she will compete in the atomweight division.[74]She was scheduled to take part in the ONE Atomweight Grand Prix.[75]It was reported that Ham will face Denice Zamboanga in the quarter-final of theONE Women's Atomweight Grand PrixatONE Championship: Empoweron May 28, 2021.[76]The event was later postponed due toCOVID-19precautions.[77]The event was rescheduled for September 3, 2021.[78]She won the close bout via split decision.[79]Due to the controversy the decision stirred, the bout was placed under review but the ONE Championship committee left the result standing.[80][81]

Ham was scheduled to faceStamp Fairtexin the semi-final bout ofONE Women's Atomweight Grand PrixatONE Championship: Next Generationon October 29, 2021.[82]Ham had to pull out of the bout due to injury and was replaced by alternate bout winner Julie Mezabarba.[83]

Ham was scheduled to rematch Denice Zamboanga atONE: Xon December 5, 2021.[84]Their rematch was later postponed to March 6, 2022.[85]Ham failed the hydration test the day before the fight, and was given until midnight to pass.[86]Ham was able to pass the test in the mandated time and won the fight by unanimous decision.[87]

Ham was scheduled to faceItsuki HirataatONE 163on November 18, 2022.[88]However, Hirata missed weight and failed the hydration test, and the match was scrapped after Ham declined a catchweight bout due to Hirata's history of missing weight.[89]The pair was rescheduled for March 25, 2023, atONE Fight Night 8.[90]She won the fight via unanimous decision.[91]

Ham facedStamp FairtexatONE Fight Night 14on September 29, 2023.[92][93]The bout was originally scheduled to be for the interimONE Women's Atomweight title,however after reigning championAngela Leeannounced her retirement during the event, the fight became for the vacant undisputed title.[94]Ham lost the fight via technical knockout in the third round.[95]

Kickboxing career

Ham had her first professional kickboxing match atCMA Festival 2: Ikuhisa Minowa Debut 10 Anniversary Tournamenton July 23, 2007(2007-07-23),where she defeated former Smackgirl Open Weight ChampionMegumi Yabushitaby unanimous decision.[96]On November 3, 2009(2009-11-03),Ham defeated Ayano Oishi in aK-1rules match by unanimous decision atJapan-South Korea friendship international martial arts tournament Gladiator Okayama tournament.[97]

AtJewels 7th Ringon March 19, 2010(2010-03-19),Ham had an exhibition match againstShoot boxingrising starRena Kubota.[98]

Ham earned another unanimous decision victory over Japanese fighter Miyu Matsui on April 25, 2010(2010-04-25)atGladiator 6,winning the CMA KPW Lightweight Championship.[99]

On February 27, 2011(2011-02-27),Ham facedMegumi Yabushitafor a second time atGladiator 14: KOK Samurai Series.Ham won the fight by TKO in the second round.[44][45][100]

On August 19, 2011(2011-08-19),Ham entered the2011 Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cuptournament. She defeatedEmi Fujinoand Mina in the opening rounds, but lost toErika Kamimuravia unanimous decision in the tournament final.[101][102]

Ham facedErika Kamimurain a rematch atRise 88on June 2, 2012(2012-06-02).[103]She was defeated by unanimous decision.[104]

Ham entered the2012 Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cupon August 25, 2012(2012-08-25).She defeatedLisa Ellisto advance to the semi-final round, but lost toRena Kubotavia unanimous decision.[105][106]
