Shalu District(Chinese:Sa lộc khu;pinyin:Shālù Qū;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Sa-lak-khu;lit: Sand Deer) is a suburbandistrictin centralTaichung City,Taiwan.

History

Originally a settlement of thePapora people,this region was namedChinese:Sa lộc xã;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Sa-lak-siā.During theKingdom of Tungning(1662－1683), theTaiwanese Plains Aborigineswere driven away orsinicized,and the area became aHansettlement. In 1731 duringQing rule,Tamsui Subprefecture (Chinese:Đạm thủy thính;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Tām-chúi-thiaⁿ) extended from theTai-kah Rivernorthward up toKelang(Chinese:Kê lung;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Ke-lang;Keelung).

In 1920, duringJapanese rule,the written name was changed to Sharoku (Sa lộc). Administratively, Sharoku was under Taikō District(Đại giáp quận),Taichū Prefecture.InTaiwanese Hokkien,the old name (Soa-la̍k) is still used.

In 1945 the village was changed to a township, and was upgraded to a district in 2010.
