Sidney Ashby Carroll(December 9, 1915 – May 7, 1995) was an American sports executive who served as general manager of theWashington Redskinsof theNational Football Leaguefrom 1943 to 1947. He also worked as an editor atThe Washington Postfor 25 years.

Early life

Carroll was born inWashington, D.C.and graduated fromWashington and Lee High School.While attendingGeorge Washington Universityhe worked on the sports staff ofThe Washington Times.He lost his job when the closure of anotherHearstpaper resulted in a number of senior writers, includingBob Addie,joining theTimes.He worked for theArmy and Navy Journaluntil 1936, when his former boss at theTimes,George Preston Marshall,hired him to work for theWashington Redskinsof theNational Football League(NFL).[1]

Washington Redskins

Carroll worked closely with Redskins general managerJack Espeyon the team's promotional efforts. He became the team's business manager in 1940 and succeeded Espey as general manager three years later. At 27, Carroll was the youngest GM in the NFL.[2]He resigned in 1947 to become theNorthern Virginiadistributor forFrigidaire.[3]

The Washington Post

In 1953, Carroll joined theWashington Times-Heraldas a copy editor on its sports desk. The paper was acquired byThe Washington Postthe following year and he joinedThe Posta sports copy editor and occasional football and golf columnist. He retired from the paper in 1979.[1]

Golf

Carroll was a noted amateur golfer who was twice a finalist for the Washington Golf and Country Club championship and thrice competed in theUnited States Amateur Championship.He served as president of the District of Columbia Golf Association and the Middle Atlantic Golf Association.[1][4]
