TheSign of HertogheorQueen Anne's signis a thinning or loss of the outer third of the eyebrows, and is a classical sign ofhypothyroidismoratopic dermatitis,[1][2][3]but it can also be detected inlepromatous leprosy.[4]The sign is named after the Belgian Internist Eugene Ludovic Christian Hertoghe (April 5, 1860–January 3, 1928), who was a native ofAntwerp,and was the first pioneer inthyroidfunction research.[2][3][5]

Queen Anne's sign[edit]

The association withAnne of Denmarkis based on portraiture, although history does not suggest that she suffered an underactive thyroid.[6]Theeponymis disputed by some, though it has been suggested thatAnne of France,Anne of Brittany,Anne of Austria,Anne BoleynandAnne of Clevesmay all be eliminated as candidates.[7]
