Sigrid Ulbricht(néeHeimann;born 25 July 1958) is a German formertrack and fieldathlete who competed in thelong jumpforEast Germany.She was the champion at theIAAF World CupandEuropean Cupin 1981 and represented her country at theOlympic Gamesin 1980.
Career
[edit]Born inKlötze,Bezirk Magdeburg,she took upathleticsand became a member of theSC Magdeburgsports club.[1]Ulbricht originally competed in thewomen's pentathlonand recorded a best score of 4303 points in 1977.[2]She rose to prominence in the long jump in 1980 with a runner-up finish at theEast German Athletics ChampionshipsbehindSiegrun Siegl.[3]That year she was selected for theMoscow Olympicsand finished seventh in the final.[1]
Ulbricht's best season came in 1981. She was runner-up nationally, this time toHeike Drechsler,[3]but claimed a series of international medals. At the1981 European Athletics Indoor Championshipsshe was the silver medallist behind her West German rivalKarin Hänel.[4]She won both the semi-final and final stages of the1981 European Cupwith bests of 6.85 m (22 ft5+1⁄2in) then 6.86 m (22 ft 6 in).[5][6]She achieved a lifetime best of 6.89 m (22 ft7+1⁄4in) inJenathat August before going on to win the1981 IAAF World Cupin a meet record of 6.80 m (22 ft3+1⁄2in).[7]
Ulbricht skipped the following two seasons and made her last appearances in 1984, coming second to Drechsler at the national championships and setting a season's best of 6.84 m (22 ft5+1⁄4in).[1][2][3]She had a daughterAnne Ulbrichtwho later went on to represent Germany inhandball.[1]
Ulbricht was among the athletes subject toEast German state doping,with her documents being revealed byBrigitte Berendonk.[1][8]
