Slovenian passports(Slovene:slovenski potni list) are issued to citizens ofSloveniato facilitate international travel. Every Slovenian citizen is also acitizen of the European Union.Thepassport,along with thenational identity cardallows for free rights of movement and residence in any of the states of theEuropean Union,European Economic AreaandSwitzerland,as a result of the right of free movement and residence granted inArticle 21 of the EU Treaty.[2]

TheSlovenian ID cardis also valid for travel to most other former Yugoslav republics: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Physical appearance[edit]

Slovenian passportsare the same burgundy colour as otherEuropean passports,with theSlovenian Coat of armsemblazoned in the centre of the front cover. The wordsevropska unija(English: European Union) andrepublika slovenija(English: Republic of Slovenia) are inscribed above the coat of arms and the wordpotni list(English: Passport) is inscribed below. Passports issued inofficially bilingual areas of Sloveniaalso have Italian or Hungarian text below the Slovene. These areunione europea,repubblica di sloveniaandpassaportoinItalianandeurópai unió,szlovén köztársaságandútlevélinHungarian.Slovenian passports have the standard biometric symbol at the bottom and use the standard EU design.

As of June 2024, Slovenian citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 186 countries and territories, ranking the Slovenian passport 9th overall in terms of travel freedom (tied with the Latvian and Slovak passports) and the highest ranking of the formerYugoslavianstates, according to theHenley Passport Index.[3]
