Smendes IIwas aHigh Priest of AmunatThebesinAncient Egypt.He briefly governed from around 992 to 990 BC.[1]

Biography[edit]

The nameSmendesis ahellenizationof the Egyptian nameNesbanebdjed("He ofthe ram, lord ofMendes"), while the ordinal number distinguishes him from the founder of the21st DynastySmendes I,and from the later, namesake High Priest of Amun,Smendes III.

Smendes was one of the sons of High PriestMenkheperreand Princess Isetemkheb, the daughter ofPsusennes I.[2]He married his sisterHenuttawy Cand had a daughter, Isetemkheb E; another wife, Takhentdjehuti bore himNeskhons,who would be the wife of his brother and successorPinedjem II.[2][3]

His pontificate was short and left few traces, missing, for instance from the annals of Egyptian historianManetho.He is mentioned on an inscription inKarnak,on mummy bandages and on a few bracelets found on the mummy of Psusennes I. Two extra objects bears the name of aHigh Priest of Amun Smendesbut it is not possible to determine if these refers to Smendes II or the later Smendes III: these are ascribe's palettenow at theMetropolitan Museum of Art(47.123a–g),[4][1]and abronzekneeling statuette exhibited at theMusée royal de Mariemont(ref. B242).[5]

He was succeeded by his brotherPinedjem II.
