TheSri Lankan cricket teamtoured India in February and March 2022 to play twoTestand threeTwenty20 International(T20I) matches.[1][2]The Test series formed part of the2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship.[3][4]In September 2021, theBoard of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) confirmed the schedule for the tour.[5][6]In January 2022,Sri Lanka Cricketmade a request to play the T20I matches first, as the T20I squad would be coming straight from theirtour of Australia.[7]In early February, the change was agreed by both boards, withBangalorehosting aday/nightTest match,[8][9]with the BCCI confirming the revised tour schedule.[10]
On 2 February 2022, Sri Lankan fast bowlerSuranga Lakmalannounced that he would retire from all forms of international cricket following the series.[11]On 19 February 2022, India named their squads for the matches, withRohit Sharmaappointed as their new Test captain.[12]On 26 February 2022, it was announced that the first match of the Test series would be playedbehind closed doors,with spectators being allowed to attend the second Test match.[13]However, on 1 March 2022, the crowd capacity for the first Test was increased to 50%.[14]
In the first T20I match, India made 199/2 from their 20 overs,[15]going on to win the fixture by 62 runs.[16]India won the second T20I by seven wickets to win the series with a match to play.[17]India won the third and final T20I match by six wickets to win the series 3–0.[18]
The first Test of the series was the 300th to be played by Sri Lanka,[19]and it was also the 100th Test match for India'sVirat Kohli.[20]In the Test,Ravindra Jadejascored 175not outand took nine wickets.[21]India went on to win the match inside three days,[22]by the margin of an innings and 222 runs.[23]The second Test also finished in three days, with India winning by 238 runs to win the series 2–0.[24]
Squads
[edit]Prior to the T20I matches,Deepak ChaharandSuryakumar Yadavwere both ruled out India's squad due to a hamstring injury and a hairline fracture respectively.[29]Both players picked up their injuries during the third and final T20I matchagainst the West Indies.[30]Sri Lanka'sWanindu Hasarangawas also ruled out of the T20I series after not recovering fromCOVID-19.[31]
After the first T20I match,Maheesh TheekshanaandShiran Fernandowere both ruled out of Sri Lanka's squad for the remaining matches due to injuries.[32]Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana were replaced byDhananjaya de SilvaandNiroshan Dickwellain Sri Lanka's T20I squad.[33]In India's T20I team,Ruturaj Gaikwadwas replaced byMayank Agarwalfor the remaining two matches.[34]India'sIshan Kishanwas ruled out of the third T20I, after suffering a blow to the head in the second match.[35]
Ahead of the second Test, India releasedKuldeep Yadavfrom their squad,[36]addingAxar Patelin his place.[37]Pathum NissankaandDushmantha Chameerawere both ruled out of Sri Lanka's squad for the second Test due to injuries.[38]
