The Cathedral Church of St ColumbainObanis theseatof theRoman CatholicBishop of Argyll and the Islesandmother churchof theDiocese of Argyll and the Isles.The cathedral is located on the sea front at the northern end of Oban.
History
[edit]The cathedral was designed in theNeo-Gothicstyle by the architectSir Giles Gilbert Scott,the foundation stone being laid in 1932 and the building completed in 1952. It is aCategory A listed building.[1]The work was partially funded by money raised by the diocese in theUSA,CanadaandIreland.It is constructed from pinkPeterheadand blueInverawegranite.
In theMiddle Agesthe cathedral of the diocese of Argyll was north ofObanon the island ofLismore.Dedicated toSt Moluag,Lismore Cathedralis now aChurch of ScotlandHigh Kirk.
