Stiphodonis agenusoffreshwatergobies.They inhabit swift, clear streams close to the sea and are found in large parts ofAsiaandOceania.Many of the 36 currently recognized species have extremely restricted distributions on single islands or even single streams. These are small gobies with bodies squarish in cross section. A female ofStiphodon multisquamuswith astandard lengthof 60.4mmis the largestStiphodonindividual on record.[1]Males ofStiphodonspecies are often vividly colored and a few species are occasionally sold in theaquarium trade,includingStiphodon ornatus,Stiphodon atropurpureus,Stiphodon maculidorsalis,Stiphodon semoni,andStiphodon surrufus.

- Stiphodon alcedoMaeda,Mukai&Tachihara,2012– Described fromOkinawaandIriomotein theRyukyu Islands,Japan,[2]but these may bevagrant populationstransported to Japan via theKuroshio Current(similar toStiphodon surrufus), and the species may actually beendemicto and present in larger numbers in thePhilippines[3]

- Stiphodon atropurpureus(Herre,1927)(Bue neon goby) – Probablyendemicto thePhilippines,but possiblevagrant populationsor misidentified specimens have also been recorded fromJapan,Taiwan,southernChina,and southernMalaysia.[3][9][10]Often confused with the very similarStiphodon semoni,though their native ranges do not overlap. Many other similar-looking species ofStiphodonare also mislabeled asS. atropurpureusin theaquarium trade.[11][12]
