Storjuvtindenis amountaininLom MunicipalityinInnlandetcounty,Norway.The 2,344-metre (7,690 ft) tall mountain is located in theJotunheimenmountains withinJotunheimen National Park.The mountain sits about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of the village ofFossbergomand about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of the village ofØvre Årdal.The peak is on the massif between the valleysLeirdalenandVisdalen.The mountain is surrounded by several other notable mountains includingGaldhøpiggenandKeilhaus toppto the northeast;Svellnosbreahesten,Midtre Tverråtinden,andStore Tverråtindento the southeast;Bukkehøeto the southwest;Skardstindento the west;StorgrovtindenandStorgrovhøeto the northwest; andVeslpiggento the north.[2]
The mountain can be accessed from Geitsætri in Leirdalen without a glacier crossing. It isNorway's 12th highest mountain,with respect to aTopographic prominenceof at least 50 metres (160 ft).[3]
Name
[edit]The first element is the name of theStorjuvetgorge.The last element is the finite form oftindwhich means 'mountain peak'. The name of the gorge is a compound ofstorwhich means 'big' andjuvwhich means 'gorge' or 'canyon'. The gorge is also the source of the name of the glacierStorjuvbreanin the bottom of the gorge.
