John Stuart Agnew(born 30 August 1949) is a British politician who served asMember of the European Parliament(MEP) for theEast of Englandregion for theUK Independence Party(UKIP) from2009to2019.

Early life and career

Agnew was born inNorwich,and educated atGordonstoun Schooland theRoyal Agricultural College.[1]During the 1970s he worked inRhodesiaas a soil conservation officer, as well as being a reserve in the Rhodesian Army. A long-time UKIP member, he is aNorfolkfarmer who formerly represented Norfolk on theNFUCouncil.[2]

Political career

He sits on theEuropean Parliament Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.[citation needed]

He was the UKIP candidate inMid Norfolkat the2001 general election,inNorfolk Northat the2005 general election,[3]and inBroadlandat the2010and2015 general elections.[citation needed]

As UKIP'sShadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,Agnew has describedclimate changescience as "the global warming scam".[4]In the European Parliament in 2015, he stated that plants needcarbon dioxideas food, so "if you succeed in decarbonising Europe, our crops will have no natural gas to grow from".Richard A. Bettsof theMet Officedescribed this as a misunderstanding, since cutting emissions did not mean reducing existing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.[5]

In the2017 UKIP leadership election,he was the running-mate ofAnne Marie Waters.[6]

In April 2019, Agnew was appointed Deputy Leader of UKIP in theEuropean Parliamentfollowing the resignation ofRay Finch,and it was reported that he spoke to theSpringbok Club.[7]

Agnew lost his seat at the2019 European Parliament election,when UKIP dropped to seventh position with 3.42% of the regional vote.
