Stuart Ian Duncan[1](born April 14, 1964) is an Americanbluegrassmusician who plays thefiddle,mandolin,guitar,andbanjo.

Life

Duncan was born inQuantico, Virginia,and raised inSanta Paula, California,where he played in the school band. He is married with three children.[2]

Duncan has been a member of theNashville Bluegrass Bandsince 1985. He also works as asession musicianand has played with numerous well-known performers, includingGeorge Strait,Dolly Parton,Guy Clark,Reba McEntire,andBarbra Streisand.[3]In 2006, he toured with theMark KnopflerEmmylou HarrisRoadrunning tour, and he appears on theirAll the RoadrunningandReal Live Roadrunningalbums. In 2008, he joinedRobert PlantandAlison Krausson the tour for their critically acclaimed albumRaising Sand.He appeared onTransatlantic SessionsSeries 4 broadcast by the BBC in September/October 2009.

In 2011, Duncan collaborated with cellistYo-Yo Ma,bassistEdgar Meyer,mandolinistChris Thile,and singerAoife O'Donovanon the albumThe Goat Rodeo Sessions.The album debuted at number one on theBillboardClassical, Classical Crossover, and Bluegrass charts[4][5]and reached number eighteen on theBillboard 200.[6]It also won theGrammy Award for Best Folk Albumand theGrammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classicalin 2013.[7]

In 2013, Duncan accompaniedDiana Krallas a sideman on herGlad Rag Dolltour.[8]In 2015 Duncan appeared on one of the tracks from the Jericho Summer albumNight Train.Playing jazz on the violin, Duncan again toured with Diana Krall in 2018.

In 2020, Duncan once again collaborated with Ma, Meyer, Thile, and O'Donovan, releasing the albumNot Our First Goat Rodeo.[5]Like the group's previous album, reached number one on theBillboardClassical, Classical Crossover, and Bluegrass charts.[6]

Duncan played fiddle on the mid-2021 Bob Dylan recordings of "Blowin' in the Wind,""Masters of War,""The Times They Are A-Changin' (song),""Simple Twist of Fate,""Gotta Serve Somebody,"and"Not Dark Yet"produced byT-Bone Burnettand recorded and mixed by Michael Piersante for a one-time sale as Ionic Originals.[9]

Awards

Duncan has received numerous awards. As a member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band, he won theGrammy Award for Best Bluegrass Albumin 1994 and 1996.[10]Duncan was named theAcademy of Country MusicFiddle Player of the Year for 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2004, and Specialty Instrument Player of the Year for 2006.[3]
