Stuart Weir(13 October 1938 – 2 July 2024) was a British journalist, writer, and Visiting Professor with the Government Department at theUniversity of Essex.He was previously the Director of theDemocratic Audit,formerly a research unit of the University of Essex.[1]Weir was a founder of the constitutional reform pressure groupCharter 88,and was editor of the weekly political magazine theNew Statesmanfrom 1987 to 1991,[2]having previously been deputy editor ofNew Society,[1]which merged with theNew Statesmanin 1988.[2]Weir was editor of theLabour Party's monthly magazineNew Socialistin the mid-1980s. Weir died on 2 July 2024, at the age of 85.[3]
