Susan Rasky(June 10, 1952 – December 29, 2013) was an American universityeducatorandpolitical journalistfor theNew York Times.She won theGeorge Polk Awardfor her coverage of Capitol Hill in 1991.

Early life and education

Susan Rasky was born in 1952 inHollywood,California[1]toJewish,liberalparents.[1]She was raised inBaldwin Hills, Los Angelesand attended high school in theFairfax District.[1]

Rasky received herbachelor's degreein history from theUniversity of California, Berkeleyin 1974,[2]and later earned hermaster's degreein economic history from theLondon School of Economics.[3]

Career

Rasky moved toWashington, D.C.to pursue a career in journalism. She covered economic policy forReutersand theBureau of National Affairsfor five years.[1]In 1984, Rasky was hired as an editor byThe New York Times.[1]The Timeseventually named Rasky as its congressional correspondent. She continued to write for Reuters, and was hired as a columnist and contributing editor forThe California Journal.[3]

In 1991,[3]Rasky was a joint recipient of aGeorge Polk Awardfor her coverage of the budget debates in 1990.[2]Rasky shared the honor withDavid Rosenbaum.[2]She also wrote for publications includingThe Los Angeles Times,National Public Radio,The Sacramento Bee[4]andSalon.[5]

In 1992, Rasky joined theBerkeley's Graduate School of Journalismfaculty teaching political journalism as a senior lecturer.[1]Her students reportedly referred to themselves as "Raskyites"[4]and "Raskyfarians".[3]
