Svein Finnerud(2 September 1945 – 22 June 2000)[1]was a Norwegianjazzpianist, painter and graphic artist.[2]

Career

Finnerud was educated atStatens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole(1967–72), under guidance ofChrix Dahland had several exhibitions and has been purchased byNasjonalgalleriet.[2]He was known in Norwegian jazz circles in the 1960s, as part of the Knut Audum's Orchestra,[3]where he played with guitarist and bassistBjørnar Andresen.He established thefree jazzbandFinnerud Trio(1967–74), with Bjørnar Andresen and drummerEspen Rud.With theirPaul Bleyinspired musical expression, they played at a number of international jazz festivals, includingWarsaw(1970). They releasedSvein Finnerud Trio(1969),Plastic sun(1970,Odin Records1993) andThoughts(1974/1984), and became known for his multi-media art forms of jazz and the visual arts, including working withPeter OpsvikandCarl Magnus Neumann,as well asHenie-Onstad Art Centre.[1][4] The trio recorded the albumMultimal(1971), a musical setting of poems by poetTrond Botnen.They also took part in the experimental works ofKetil Bjørnstad.[5] In the 1990s the trio performed atMoldejazz1993, and the year after released the albumTravel Pillow,withSvein Christiansenas replacement on drums (from 1992), and played theKongsberg Jazz Festivaltogether with the bandClose Erase(1997).[2]

In his own name, Finnerud released the albumSounds and sights(2000),[6]with contributions byJon Eberson(guitar),Terje Gewelt(bass),Svein Christiansen(drums) andNils Petter Molvær(trumpet), as well as his sonBendik Finnerud(piano). The albumEgne hoderbyBjørnar Andresen/Paal Nilssen-Love(BP Records, 2000) has multiple inputs from, and dedications to, Finnerud.
