Tærø
Tærø(Danish pronunciation:[ˈtsʰeːˌʁøˀ]) is a smallDanishisland in the Ulvsund Strait (Baltic Sea) betweenZealandandMøn,not far fromBogøand theFarø Bridges.Located inVordingborg Municipality,the island has an area of 173 hectares (430 acres). As of January 2010[update]there was only one inhabitant registered on the island.[1]
The island is formed by twoglacial morainehills surrounded bycoastal meadowsand small headlands.[2]Access to the island is from the harbour at Petersværft on Zealand.
Tærø today
[edit]Tærø is privately owned and (as of 2010[update]) most of it is grazed by 180 head ofScottish highland cattlefromTærø Avlsgard,the only farm on the island.[3]
There are also approximately 25Exmoor poniesroaming freely on the island. They were introduced in the 1960s by a group of researchers.[4]In 2003 some of the horses were moved toKlise NoronLangeland.
Round Tærø Race
[edit]Every year in June, the boat club on neighbouringBogøarranges the Round Tærø boat race. In 2010, it took place for the 21st time. There are individual competitions forkeel boats,motorboatsandmultihulled boats.[5]
