T. J. Thorburn

Thomas James Thorburn(1858 - 16 January 1923), best known asT. J. Thorburnwas a BritishDoctor of Divinityand writer.

Biography

Thorburn was born inDerby.He was married to Emily Jane. They had two children, Charles and Evelyn.

He gained a B.A. degree in the Natural Science Tripos in 1879 atChrist's College, Cambridge,and was second master atChesterfield Grammar Schoolfrom 1882 to 1885. He was then Senior Science Master atSheffield Grammar School,before his appointment as Headmaster ofCaistor School.In 1897 he was appointed headmaster ofOdiham Grammar School,Hampshire.[1]He was later the headmaster ofHastings Grammar School.[2]

Thorburn was a firm believer in thehistoricity of Jesusand an opponent of theChrist myth theory.[3][4][5]Though a theological conservative and defender of the canonical history as traditionally presented, Thorburn did diverge from modish mainstream evangelical convictions.

In his bookThe Mythical Interpretation of the Gospels(1916) he combated the ideas of mythicistsArthur Drews,J. M. RobertsonandWilliam Benjamin Smith.[6][7]It was entered into a competition and Thorburn won a prize of $6,000 from theBross Foundation.[8][9]
