Tadese Tola(born 31 October 1987 inAddis Ababa[1]) is an Ethiopianlong-distance runner.He has represented Ethiopia at World championship level incross country,road running,and on the track.

He made his first impact in 2006, helping the Ethiopian teams to bronze medals in the junior race at the2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championshipsand the 20 km race at the2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships.He won a silver medal at theAll-Africa Gamesin the10,000 metresand ran at the2007 World Championships.

He has largely focused on road running since 2008, scoring wins at theNew York City Half MarathonandSan Silvestre Vallecana.He made hismarathondebut in 2009 at theChicago Marathonand won on his second attempt at theParis Marathon.He was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the2013 World Championships in Athletics.

Career

He competed as a junior at the2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championshipsand helped the Ethiopian team to a junior team bronze with his tenth-place finish.[2]At the2006 African Championshipshe finished fifth in the 10,000 metres with a personal best time of 28:15.16 minutes. He finished seventh at the2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships,thereby helping Ethiopia to a bronze medal in the team competition.

He was the 2007 winner of theCross Internacional de Venta de BañosinSpain,[3]and Tola went on to finish seventh at the2007 IAAF World Cross Country ChampionshipsinMombasa.He was Ethiopia's best finisher in the competition, in which reigning championKenenisa Bekeledropped out from exhaustion. A week after the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, he won theCherry Blossom Ten Mile Runin Washington DC.[4]On track, he won the silver at the2007 All-Africa Gamesin the 10,000 m in July, but only managed 13th in the final at the2007 World Championships in Athletics.He had much success on the American road circuit in 2008, winning theFalmouth Road Raceand then going to take first place in the 2008New York City Half Marathonwith a time of 1:00:58.[5]He closed the year with a win at theSan Silvestre Vallecanain Spain.

He ran at the2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championshipsand finished 17th overall. He broke the course record at theHealthy Kidney 10Krun inCentral Parkin May that year – finishing with a time of 27:48 minutes, he beatDathan Ritzenhein's previous record by 20 seconds to win the Zayed Bonus prize of $20,000.[6]Tola was disqualified from the 2009Peachtree Road Racefor elbowing competitorBoaz Cheboiywoin the final 30 metres of the race. Tola was the fourth-place finisher before being disqualified.[7][8]Tola's agent later disputed the disqualification, saying that Tola's actions were unintentional. He followed an appeal, but it was received too late for review.[9]He defended his title at the NYC Half Marathon, finishing a minute ahead of the rest of the field.[10]He ran in his firstmarathonat the 2009Chicago Marathon,running 2:15:48 to take tenth place.[11]

Tadese Tola began 2010 with a second-place finish at theRas Al Khaimah Half Marathon,setting a personal best of 59:49 on the way.[12]He significantly improved his marathon best in April at theParis Marathonto win the race over more-favoured opposition in a time of 2:06:41 – establishing him as the fifth-fastest ever Ethiopian over the distance.[13][14]He took the top honours at thePortugal Half Marathonin September, beatingJosphat MenjoandFrancis Kipropto win in 1:01:05. He was satisfied to have beaten such competition over the distance after finishing second in Ras Al Khaimah.[15]He competed at theFrankfurt Marathonin October and improved his best for the distance by ten seconds, although he was beaten into second place byWilson Kipsang.[16]He was one of the favourites entering the 2011Eindhoven Marathon,but he finished fourth in a time of 2:07:13 hours while the relatively unknownJafred Chirchir Kipchumbawon the race.[17]

Tadese achieved a personal best time in January at the 2012Dubai Marathon,knocking over a minute off his previous time with a run of 2:05:10 hours. However, he managed only fifth place due to the high quality of the field, where the winnerAyele Absherobecame the fourth fastest man ever.[18]He was expected to perform well at theOttawa 10K,but finished in fourth more than a minute behindGeoffrey Mutai.[19]History repeated at the Eindhoven Marathon, where he entered as favourite but finished in fourth place.[20]A personal best of 2:04:49 hours came in his first race of 2013 at theDubai Marathon,but the quick pace of the race left him in third place, four seconds behind winnerLelisa Desisa.[21]

He was the favourite at the 2013 Paris Marathon, but finished as runner-up as he was unable to respond toPeter Some's late surge.[22]He made a concerted attempt to win the world title at the2013 World Championships in Athletics,leading for large portions of the marathon race, but eventually faded to third place.[23]Following this he took downTaisuke Kodama's long-lasting course record at theBeijing Marathon,running 2:07:16 hours to win the race and beat the 27-year-old mark.[24]
