Takashi FujimotoASC(born July 12, 1939) is a retired Americancinematographer.[1]He is known for his collaborations with directorsJonathan Demme,M. Night ShyamalanandJohn Hughes.He is aPrimetime Emmy Awardwinner, and aBAFTAandSatellite Awardnominee. In 2016, he was named one of the 11 best cinematographers to have never won anAcademy Award.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Takashi Fujimoto(Japanese:Đằng bổn long)was born inSan Diego, CaliforniatoJapanese Americanparents. His father, Morizo, was anIssei(first-generation) fromHiroshima,and his mother, Emi, was aNisei(second-generation) born inGlendale, California.His older brother,Jack Fujimoto,was a well-known academic. DuringWorld War II,Fujimoto and his family wereinternedat thePoston War Relocation Centerdue toExecutive Order 9066.[3]
Fujimoto graduatedSan Dieguito Academyfrom 1957. He studied at theUniversity of California, Berkeleyand theLondon Film School.He began his career as an assistant toHaskell Wexlerat his production company Dove Films.
Career
[edit]Fujimoto’s first film as cinematographer wasChicago Blues,a 1970 music documentary featuring the likes ofDick Gregory,Buddy GuyandMuddy Waters.He was one of three directors of photography that worked onTerence Malick’s 1973 directorial debutBadlands,earning rave reviews. He shot a string of low-budgetexploitation filmsfor producerRoger Corman,includingDeath Race 2000andSwitchblade Sisters(as second unit photographer). He was also one of severalsecond unit cinematographerswho worked on the firstStar Warsfilm.
During this period, he also began his long-running collaboration with directorJonathan Demme.Their first film together wasCaged Heatin 1974. He would shoot a total of 11 films with Demme, as well as the 2013 pilot episode of the television dramaA Gifted Man.He also had fruitful collaborations withM. Night Shyamalan,shootingThe Sixth Sense,Signs,andThe Happening.
Fujimoto has been a member of theAmerican Society of Cinematographerssince 1997.[4]
Personal life
[edit]Fujimoto had retired by 2015, and lived with his wife Anthea inSanta Fe, New Mexico.[5]He is the younger brother of academicJack Fujimoto.[6]
