Talia Rose Shire(néeCoppola;born April 25, 1946) is an American actress, best known for her roles asConnie CorleoneinThe Godfathertrilogyand Adrianne Pennino Balboa in theRockyseries.For her work inThe Godfather Part IIandRocky,Shire was nominated forAcademy AwardsforBest Supporting ActressandBest Actress,respectively, and for theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Dramafor her role inRocky.

Early life and family[edit]

Shire was born Talia Rose Coppola in theWoodhavensection ofQueens, New York,[2]in 1946. Her maternal grandparents came to the United States fromBernalda,Basilicata.[3]Her maternal grandfather, popular Italian composer Francesco Pennino, emigrated fromNaples,Italy.[4]

Shire is the only daughter ofItalia(néePennino) and arranger/composerCarmine Coppola.She is the sister of director and producerFrancis Ford Coppola,and of the academicAugust Coppola,the aunt of actorNicolas Cage,and of directorSofia Coppola,and the niece of composer and conductorAnton Coppola.[5]

At a young age her family moved toLake SuccessonLong Island,New York,where she lived through high school.[6]

She has three children. Her son Matthew Orlando Shire is the child of her first marriage to composerDavid Shire.Her other sons, actors/musiciansJasonandRobert,are from her second marriage, to the film producerJack Schwartzman.[7]

Shire portrayedConnie CorleoneinThe Godfatherand its sequels and was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actressfor her performance inThe Godfather Part II(1974).[6]For her portrayal of Adrian Pennino, the love interest ofRocky BalboainRocky(1976),[8]she won theNew York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress,theNational Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress,and was nominated for both theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Dramaand theAcademy Award for Best Actress.In addition to reprising her Adrian role in fourRockysequels,[9]Shire has appeared in such films asKiss the Bride(2002),I Heart Huckabees(2004), andHomo Erectus(2007).[10]
