Main Page error reports
National variations of the English languagehave been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error incontent currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correctionif possible.
- Referencesare helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs onCoordinated Universal Time(UTC, currently 03:18 on 29 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually onlyprotected from editingbeginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you canbe boldand fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use{{edit fully-protected}}on this page, which willnotget a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems.(See the bottom ofthis revisionfor an example.)
- No chit-chat.Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors.Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment.Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved.Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Checkthe revision historyfor a record of any discussion or action taken; noarchivesare kept.

- 1781 – The crew of the British slave ship Zong, running low on water, began the killing of more than 130 African slaves by throwing them into the sea to claim insurance. - Can we change "African slaves" to 'enslaved African people' per the target featured article?JennyOz(talk)12:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

- Maybe, but basically meh. Looking atenglish.stackexchange.comand/r/grammar,I see arguments for either usage. In my mind, the "would" expresses not just the "talking about the future in the past" sense, but also gives a measure of uncertainty; in 1924 it was known that the club had been founded, but it was not yet known that it would (there's that word again) eventually lead the count.RoySmith(talk)20:47, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- To me it looks fine. The only concern I had was leading the society'swhat, but that was just where you cropped it.Secretlondon(talk)21:36, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Somehow this has ended up with only 3 entries rather than the normal 4-6, and it looks like there are plenty of eligible items atWikipedia:Selected anniversaries/November 30.At least for me, this is leading to very bad MP balance. Even worse, the photo goes with an item that's currently listed as ineligible.:Jay8g[V•T•E]00:47, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
