Philosophy

[edit]

Wow, I didn't realize how obscure Mary Astell is. My library has absolutely nothing about her. The only thing I was able to find was a quote of hers mentioned inThe Cambridge Companion to Mary Wollstonecraft:
"Whatever... Reasons Men may have for despising Women, and keeping them in Ignorance and Slavery, it can't be from their having learnt to do so in Holy Scripture... the Bible is for, and not against us..." - Mary Astell, "Some Reflections Upon Marriage", first published in 1700; 1706 edition reprinted in Bridget Hill,The First English Feminist,84.
