Tauweru,alternativelyTaueru,and previously known asWardell,[1]orWardelltown[2]is a locality[3]in theWairaraparegion ofNew Zealand'sNorth Island.It is named after and located on the middle reaches of theTauweru River,which drains into theRuamahanga RivernearGladstoneandTe Whiti,and the name is aMāori-languageword meaning "hanging in clusters".[1]
Tauweru is situated east of the Wairarapa's largest town,Masterton,and is located on the main road between Masterton andCastlepoint.[4]The nearestrailwayis theWairarapa Linein Masterton. In June 1942, Tauweru was theepicentreof one of the most destructiveearthquakessince European settlement of the Wairarapa in the mid-19th century.[5]
