Teleocephalais a supercohort of vertebrates, it is the grouping which contains the "crown group" of theTeleostei, the bony fishes. The name was coined by Mario de Pinna in his 1996 bookInterrelationships of Fishesand thecladewas given the rank of supercohort byEdward O. WileyandG. David Johnsonin 2010.[1]Some authorities treat Teleocephala andTeleosteomorphaassynonymous, however, this is only applicable when treatingextant taxaand that the treatment of thesetaxain the 5th edition ofFishes of the Worldis somewhat confusing as de Pinna's original Teleocephala is actually a combination of three taxonomical concepts.[2]
