Tereingaornis moisleyi,also referred to asMoisley's penguin,is agenusandspeciesofextinctpenguinfrom theMiddle Plioceneof New Zealand. It was slightly smaller than the extantFiordland crested penguin.It wasdescribedbyRon Scarlettin 1983 from fossil material (acoracoid,humerusand other bones) found by William Moisley near Te Reinga Falls on theWairoa River,in theHawke's Bay Regionof theNorth Island.Another specimen was found later at Waihi Beach,Hāwera,on theSouth Taranaki Bight.The genus nameTereingaorniscombines the name of the type locality with theGreekornis( "bird" ); the specific epithet honours the discoverer of the fossil.[2][3][4]
