The Orderpremiered in competition at the81st Venice International Film Festivalin August 2024. It is set to be released onPrime Videoin Canada.

Premise

In 1983, an Idaho-basedFBIagent spots a pattern in recent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations and armored car heists terrorizing communities across the Pacific Northwest. He sets out to prove it is not the work of a traditional organized crime unit, but a radical group with a charismatic leaderBob Mathews.[4]

In February 2023, it was announced thatJude LawandNicholas Houltwould star inThe Order,directed byJustin Kurzelfrom a screenplay byZach Baylinbased onThe Silent Brotherhood,a 1989 non-fiction book by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt. Law would also produce, while Kurzel and Baylin would executive produce.[6]In May 2023,Tye Sheridan,Jurnee Smollett,Odessa Young,Alison OliverandMarc Maronjoined the cast.[7][8]

Filming began in May 2023, inAlberta,Canada.[7][9]

The Orderhad its world premiere at the81st Venice International Film Festivalon August 31, 2024, where it competed for theGolden Lion.[10]Amazon Prime Videowill distribute in multiple international territories excluding the United States.[11]In May 2024,Verticalacquired U.S. distribution rights to the film, and will release it on December 6, 2024, in a limited theatrical release.[4][12]

On thereview aggregatorwebsiteRotten Tomatoes,86% of 37 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.60/10.[13]Metacritic,which uses aweighted average,assigned the film a score of 72 out of 100, based on 17 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[14]
