From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Herier,Erier,Erriers,orErars(fl.1240–1270)[1]was aPicardtrouvèreassociated with the "Arrasschool ".

Herier is not mentioned in contemporary documents and all that is known about him is derived from his works. He composed ajeu partiwithGillebert de Bernevilleand possibly another withGuillaume le Vinier. He addressed one poem to "Jakemon of Cyson" (Jacques de Cysoing) and another to aTrésorier, probably either theTrésorier de Lilleor theTrésorier d'Aire. His relation to Arras is established by his references to a local banker, Audefroi Louchart, and the localsheriff,Mikiel le Waisdier. He also mentions in his poemsJeanne, Countess of Ponthieu, and theSire du Roeulx(Rués).

According toTheodore Karp,"Herier's poetry displays a certain elegance, but is commonplace in thought and imagery." His poems areheptasyllabicwith the exception of thedecasyllabicMais n'os chanterand generallyisometric. All his melodies are inbar formsave for thedescortUn descort vaurai retraire.None of them survive inmensural notation.Karp considersBien me sui aperceusandJa ne lairai mon usageto be more ornate than the others.

He was responsible for numerousles grande chansons courtoisein the style of the vernacularlais,[2][3]which often address the irony, in theprotagonist'sview, of falling in love with a woman when this makes her one's "lord and master" in doing so.[4]
