Thomas "Tom" Rickman(February 8, 1940 – September 3, 2018)[1]was an American film director, playwright, and screenwriter, known for his work on the 1980 filmCoal Miner's Daughter.
Early life and education
[edit]Rickman was born inSharpe, Kentucky.
He was in the first class at theAFI ConservatoryinLos Angeles;the class also includedGill Dennis,Terrence Malick,David LynchandCaleb Deschanel.[2][3]
Career
[edit]In 1975, his stage playBalaampremiered at thePasadena Repertory TheatreinPasadena, California's historicThe Hotel Carver,under artistic director Duane Waddell, directed byGill Dennis,starringElizabeth Hartman,Peter Brandon, Howard Whalen, and was the theatrical debut ofEd Harris.[citation needed]
He received a nomination forAcademy Award for Best Adapted Screenplayfor writing the screenplay ofCoal Miner's Daughter.[4]His other films includeHooper(1978),Truman(1995),Everybody's All-American(1988), and the television filmTuesdays with Morrie(1999)[5]
