History

Construction of the stadium began on 4 July 1984 at the former site of Guangzhou Tianhe Airport.[1]It was opened in August 1987 for the 1987National Games of China.[3]In 1991, it hosted thefinal matchof the inauguralFIFA Women's World Cupbetween theUnited StatesandNorway.[4]Local football teamGuangzhou Evergrandemoved into the stadium ahead of the2011 seasonfollowing promotion to theChinese Super League.[5]In February 2016, the club obtained the operating rights of the stadium from Guangzhou Sports Bureau for the next twenty years.[6]

The stadium hosted the football finals of the2010 Asian Gamesand the final match of theAFC Champions Leaguetwice, in2013and2015.

The stadium is best reached by takingGuangzhou MetroLine 1toTianhe Sports Center Station(East Gate),Line 3toLinhexi Station(North Gate) and Line 1 or 3 toTiyu Xilu Station(West Gate and South Gate).
