Timothy R. BeddingFAA(born 21 July 1966) is an Australianastronomerknown for his work onasteroseismology, the study of stellar oscillations. In particular, he contributed to the first detections ofsolar-like oscillationsin stars such aseta Bootis, beta Hydriandalpha Centauri.[1]He also led the discovery, using data from theKepler space telescope, that red giants oscillate inmixedmodes that are directly sensitive to the core properties of the star and can be used to distinguish red giants burning helium in their cores from those that are still only burning hydrogen in a shell.[2]

Bedding has worked in theSchool of Physicsat theUniversity of Sydneysince 1995[3]and was Head of School from 2012 to 2018.[4] He received the University's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1999 and was appointed as aPayne ScottProfessor in 2019.[5]

Theasteroid231470 Beddingis named after him.[6]

He played on the Australian team in the 1990 Ultimate Frisbee World Championships inOslo,Norway.[7]

In May 2020 Bedding was elected Fellow of theAustralian Academy of Science.[8] In 2022, he was awarded anARC Laureate Fellowshipto use asteroseismology to measure the ages of stars.
