Tim van Rijthoven[1](born 24 April 1997) is a Dutch professionaltennisplayer.

Van Rijthoven has a career-highATPsinglesrankingof world No. 101, which he first achieved on 18 July 2022, and a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 225, attained in May 2022.[2]As a junior, he reached a high of world No. 13 in 2015 and reached the quarterfinals of the2014 Wimbledon Championships boys' singlestournament and semifinals of theboys' doubles.[3]In June 2022, he claimed his first fiveATP Tourwins (including over world No. 2Daniil Medvedev) en route to his maidenRosmalen Grass Court Championshipstitle.[4]

Van Rijthoven has representedNetherlandsat theDavis Cupwhere he has a W/L record of 2–1. He has won 13 Futures tournaments on theITF World Tennis Tour,including eight singles titles and five doubles titles.

Professional career[edit]

2016: ATP debut and top 300[edit]

In 2016 he made his debut on theATP World Tourby qualifying as alucky loserfor theWinston-Salem OpenafterThanasi Kokkinakiswithdrew due to a recurring shoulder injury, where he lost toJiří Veselýin the first round.[5]Van Rijthoven described the match as "a great experience".[6]

2022: Maiden ATP title with win over World No. 2, Major debut and fourth round, top 105[edit]

He made his top 250 debut in doubles on 17 January 2022 after a quarterfinal in Challenger in Traralgon, Australia partnering withNino Serdarušić.He made his top 200 debut in singles on 21 February 2022 after reaching his second singles Challenger final as a qualifier in Forli, Italy. At the same tournament, seeded third, he reached the quarterfinals in doubles withRobin Haaseand improved his doubles ranking to No. 235.

Ranked No. 205 on his debut at the2022 Libéma Openas a wildcard, he defeatedMatthew Ebdenand world No. 14 and third seedTaylor Fritzto reach the quarterfinals for the first time in his career.[7]Next, he beatHugo Gastonin straight sets to reach his first semifinal.[8][9]There, he won against a top 10 player for the first time in his career by upsetting world No. 9 and second seedFélix Auger-Aliassimein the semifinals.[10]Van Rijthoven pulled off another upset by defeating world no. 2 and top seedDaniil Medvedevin straight sets in the final, becoming the lowest ranked player to win an ATP title in 2022, the lowest-ranked player to win a title since the 335th-rankedJuan Manuel Cerúndoloin2021 Córdobaand the first Dutchman to win the ATP 250 event sinceSjeng Schalkenin 2003.[11]He moved to just outside the top 100 at World No. 106 on 13 June 2022 climbing 99 positions up in the rankings.[12][13]

As a result of his title run, van Rijthoven received a wildcard intoWimbledonwhere he made his Grand Slam debut.[14]On his Major debut he won his first Grand Slam match at Wimbledon in three straight sets defeatingFederico Delbonis.In the second round he defeated 15th seedReilly Opelka,[15]then in the third round, he defeated 22nd seedNikoloz Basilashvilito advance to the fourth round of a major on his debut, becoming the seventh ATP player to achieve that feat since 2000[16][17][18]and only the third player in the past two years to do so afterAslan KaratsevandLorenzo Musetti,as well as the first wildcard sinceNick Kyrgiosto reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.[citation needed]In the round of 16, he lost to the top seed and eventual champion,Novak Djokovicin four sets.[19][20]

Due to a back injury sustained inIndianapolis,van Rijthoven did not play any tournaments until his debut at theUS Open.He beat qualifierZhang Zhizhenin the first round, saving 7 match points in the third set.[21]He was beaten by 5th seed and eventual runner up,Casper Ruud,in the second round.

2023: Loss of form, hiatus[edit]

He reached the second round at the2023 Maharashtra Open.[22]

He played his last match of the season in February at his home tournament the2023 ABN AMRO Openas a wildcard where he lost toMaxime Cressy.[23]Due to not being able to defend his title at the2023 Libéma Openhe fell out of the top 350 to No. 390 on 12 June 2023.

2024: Return announced[edit]

In early June it was announced that Van Rijtoven had received a wildcard and would return to the grass at2024 Libéma Openwhere he had won the tournament as a wildcard 2 years ago.[24]
