Gallagher grew up in the ski resort town ofMammoth Lakes,Californiawhere he was the quarterback for the Mammoth Huskies high school football team. He graduated from high school in 1979. Gallagher studied at theUniversity of San Diegoand he majored in business[1]playing quarterback for the Torero football team.[2]Trace scored a 1600 on the SAT college entrance exam in 1979, as he mentioned on his or another Fox News cable TV show during the first week in April 2024.

Based inLos Angeles,Gallagher served as a co-anchor (withMartha MacCallum) ofThe Live Deskand as a substitute anchor forStudio B with Shepard SmithandFox Report.During his time at Fox, Gallagher has reported on theSpace Shuttle Columbia disasterand the2004 Southeast Asian tsunami.[1]Gallagher has also served as a general assignment correspondent.

He has worked at Fox'sChicago,San Francisco,andNew York Citynews bureaus. Previously Gallagher worked at WCPX (nowWKMG) inOrlando,KVBC (nowKSNV) inLas Vegas,andKTVBinBoise.

On February 1, 2010,The Live Deskwas replaced withAmerica Live with Megyn Kelly.Gallagher continues to anchor and report on Fox programs.[3]

On September 21, 2022, he was named permanent host ofFox News @ Night,replacing founding hostShannon Breamafter she was named host ofFox News Sunday.He has been hosting the program since October 3, 2022.[4][5]
