Tritonsare a fictional species in theDungeons & Dragonsfantasyrole-playing game.

Thetritonswere introduced to theDungeons & Dragonsgame in its first supplement,Greyhawk(1975),[1]and also appeared in theEldritch Wizardrysupplement.[2]

The triton appeared in the first edition ofAdvanced Dungeons & Dragonsin the originalMonster Manual(1977).[3]

The triton appeared in theDungeons & Dragonsadventure moduleThe War Rafts of Kron(1984). The triton also appeared in theCreature Catalogue(1986),[4]and reprinted in theCreature Catalog(1993).[5]The triton appeared as aplayer characterclassinThe Sea People(1990).[6]

The triton appeared in the second edition ofAdvanced Dungeons & Dragonsin theMonstrous Compendium Volume Two(1989),[7]and reprinted in theMonstrous Manual(1993).[8]The triton appeared as a playablecharacter racefor theForgotten Realmssetting inSea of Fallen Stars(1999).[9]

The triton appeared in the third editionMonster Manual(2000),[10]and in the 3.5 revisedMonster Manual(2003). The triton appeared as a player character race inSavage Species(2003),[11]

The triton was added as a playable race forDungeons & Dragons5th Edition inVolo's Guide to Monsters(2016).

Description

Tritons are aquatic humanoid creatures, loosely based on themermangodTritonfromGreek mythology.[citation needed] Tritons resembleaquatic elvesin their upper half, but their lower halves are more fish-like, with scaly legs and webbed feet. They favortridentsover other weapons.

Tritons are of theoutsidertype but native to theMaterial Plane,though they are thought to originate from theElemental Planeof Water. Tritons are able to magically summonwater elementalsand other creatures of the sea to come to their aid.

A triton is usuallyneutralin alignment. They are the natural enemies of thesahuagin.
