Tropojë(Albanian:[tɾɔˈpɔjə];Albaniandefinite form:Tropoja) is amunicipalityinKukës County,northeasternAlbania,within the historical ethnographic region of theGjakova Highlands.The municipality consists of the administrative units ofBajram Curri,Bujan,Bytyç,Fierzë,Lekbibaj,Llugaj,Margegajand Tropojë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Bajram Curri.[1][2]As of theInstitute of Statisticsestimate from the 2011 census, there were 4,117 people residing in the municipal unit Tropojë and 20,517 in Tropojë Municipality.[1][3][a]

Etymology

Tropojë's old name wasTrebopoljeand is recorded inSerbianmedieval charters[4]andOttoman registers.[5]The word itself comes from the oldSlavictrebiti,‘to clean’, andpolje,‘field’, i.e. ‘clean field’.[6]

History

The region was inhabited byIllyrian tribes.Archaeological evidence found in the area, such as castles ortumuli,shows that the area has been populated since the ancient time.[7]The region lies in the geographical span of theDardanitribes.

Geography

Tropojë Municipality is located on the bank ofValbonë Riverbetween theAlbanian Alpsin northeastern Albania borderingMontenegroto the northwest andKosovoto the northeast and east.Valbonë Valley National Parksprawls in the northwest of Tropojë and protects the Valbonë Valley and theGashi River,which has been inscribed on theUNESCOWorld Heritagelist as portion of theAncient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.[8]The area of the municipality is 1,057.3 km2(408.2 sq mi).[1][9]

Climate

According to theKöppen climate classification,Tropojë falls under the periphery of thewarm-summer Mediterranean climate(Csb) zone with an average annual temperature of 10.2 °C (50.4 °F).[10]
