Tsilla Chelton(21 June 1919[1]– 15 July 2012) was a French actress of theatre and film, famous for playing the main role in 1990 filmTatie Danielle,in which she was nominated for aCesar awardand as an elderly Dominican inSister Smile.[2]
Biography
[edit]Tsilla Schiltonwas born inJerusalembut spent her childhood in Belgium. The daughter of French parents of Jewish heritage, she lost her mother at the age of 6, and followed her father toAntwerp.[3]She moved toSwitzerlandduring World War II before settling in Paris.[4]Married to decorator Jacques Noël, she had 4 children.[5]
Attracted by theatre, she started acting inMarcel Marceau's troupe.[4]
Her career was mainly in theatre, where she acted in the eleven works ofEugène Ionesco,earning aMolière Awardfor best comedian in Ionesco'sThe Chairs.[5]She premiered the plays ofBertold Brechtin France, withMichel Serrault,Michel PiccoliandLaurent Terzieff.[4]
On the big screen, she became famous at 71[2]for her work in the 1990Étienne ChatiliezfilmTatie Danielle,where she played the title role as a hateful and cantankerous old lady. She taughtcomedyfrom 1964 onwards and was the teacher of the actors of theSplendidtroupe, includingGérard Jugnot,Michel Blanc,andThierry Lhermitte.[3]
Death
[edit]Chelton died at 93 inBrussels, Belgium.[4][6]
Her ashes were buried in thePère LachaiseCemetery, Paris.
